The GR Cup Series heads to VIRginia International Raceway (VIR) for Round 5 and 6 of the inaugural 2023 season. The 3.27-mile, 17-turn road course sits just north of the Virginia/North Carolina border in Alton, Virginia where the course configuration has remained the same since it first opened in 1957. When first developing the GR86 for the GR Cup Series, VIR was home to many test sessions as the car was fine-tuned and prepped for competition.

What to Expect

30 drivers are slated to hit the track at VIR, including four new names making their GR Cup Series debut. Those include Jack Woodfin (RVA Graphics Motorsports), Taylor Gray (Nitro Motorsports), Spencer Schmidt (Precision Racing LA), and Jaxon Bell (Smooge Racing).

Following test sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, racing action will officially kick off on Friday, June 16 with two practice sessions. Saturday will feature Race 1 qualifying at 9:50 AM ET followed by the drop of the green flag at 1:55 PM ET. An earlier start will kick things off on Sunday, June 18 with qualifying at 8:05 AM ET and Race 2 at 12:15 PM ET. Each race is a timed event and lasts 45 minutes from the green flag to checkered flag.

Both races are streamed live on grcup.com and the GT World YouTube page. Fans can also catch all the racing action by joining Ash Vandelay on Twitch by following the SROMotorsports channel. Vandelay hosts six-hour programs on Saturday and Sunday, where she is joined by drivers to chat with fans and providing insight into that day’s races.
