Wagner earns first place podium in Race 1 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Lucas Weisenberg clocked the fastest lap in qualifying to earn the Continental Tire Pole Award for Race 1 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Weisenberg took the green flag alongside Westin Workman with Copeland Motorsport teammate Gresham Wagner behind. Weisenberg got a jump on the field heading into Turn 1. Drivers made their way around the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course for the first time as contact broke out in the middle of the pack. The #24 of Jade Avedisian and #22 of Devin Anderson got into each other in turn fourteen, sending Anderson back up the track, colliding with #76 of Steven Clemons. The contact also took out #86 Andrew Gilleland, #09 Maddie Aust, and #50 Casey Mashore.

The race resumed with 27:00 minutes remaining, with Weisenberg taking the green flag. Weisenberg, Workman, and Wagner battled their way through the course, with Wagner passing them both for the lead heading into turn one. Will Robusto, Spike Kohlbecker, Jordan RickSegrini, and Henry Drury were nose to tail battling it out for a top-five finish. Kohlbecker was able to pull ahead of his competitors as Robusto, Drury, and RickSegrini trailed behind. 

With only minutes remaining in the race, Wagner, Weisenberg, and Workman battled for first; Wagner eventually pulled ahead to bring home the checkered flag. Weisenberg took home his first second-place finish of the season, and Workman secured third.

Podium

Wagner, who already claimed the 2024 Driver’s Championship, adds to his record-breaking season with a 9th win. Weisenberg collected his first second-place finish of the season and fourth career podium finish. Workman secured third place, making this his 11th career podium finish.

Race Awards

Precision Racing LA w/PT Autosport driver Henry Drury laid down the fastest lap of the race on lap twenty-three with a time of 1:40.137. Drury also claimed the Hard Charger Award after starting 19th gaining thirteen spots to bring home a 6th-place finish. Mia Lovell claimed her 9th Endava Highest Finishing Female Award of the season.

What’s Next

The Toyota Gazoo Racing North America (TGRNA) GR Cup Series will conclude the 2024 season on Sunday, October 6, with an early morning qualifying session followed by racing action at 11:55 a.m. ET.

SRO America will host their award banquet on Sunday evening where the end of season awards are presented to teams and drivers.
