Following a fourth-place finish in Saturday’s race, TechSport Racing driver Spike Kohlbecker laid down the fastest lap of the weekend in qualifying on Sunday morning to earn the Continental Tire Pole Award. Kohlbecker took the green flag for Race 2 alongside Westin Workman as the leaders were able to take advantage of track position early in the race.
The field made their way around the 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course as Max Hewitt and Will Robusto found themselves in tight quarters as they raced side-by-side for position through Turn 10 & 11, opening the door for Jade Avedisian to take them three-wide. Hewitt was able to edge out Robusto and Avedisian as Ford Koch took advantage of the battle in front of him and got to the bumper of Avedisian before settling into position.
Hewitt and Robusto continued their back-and-forth battle throughout the race as they had their sights set on chasing down the #57 of Mia Lovell. As the three drivers pushed their GR86 Cup Cars to the limit, Lovell got loose in Turn 1 and slid into the gravel bringing out the safety car for a full course yellow.
Kohlbecker’s one-second lead over Gresham Wagner was erased by the full course yellow as the field was brought together before going green with just 15 minutes remaining. Wagner and Workman were all over the rear bumper of Kohlbecker, but the TechSport Racing driver was able to hold off the hard charging Copeland Motorsports teammates for his third win of the season.
With the runner-up finish, Wagner’s overall point total has secured him the 2024 GR Cup Series driver championship after 12races. Wagner is the second Copeland Motorsports driver to claim the driver title in two years.
Podium
Kohlbecker tallied his third win of 2024 and fifth overall in the GR Cup Series. Wagner continued his podium streak, extending it to 10 straight races. Workman’s third place finish was his 11th career podium result.
Race Awards
With a time of 01:37.957, Kohlbecker clocked the fastest lap of the race to go along with his victory. Alex Garcia of Skip Barber Racing gained eight positions over the course of the 45-minute event, starting in 19th and taking the checkered flag in 11th to earn the Hard Charger Award. Nitro Motorsports driver Jade Avedisian earned the Endava Highest Finishing Female honors with a 19th place finish.
